Sonate en trio n°4 en Mi mineur BWV 528

About this work

The fourth Trio Sonata begins with a short Adagio that prepares the Vivace rather than forming a separate movement. This threshold gives weight to the entrance of the fast music. The three voices then acquire autonomy: the hands converse while the pedal part supports and renews the phrase.

The central Andante highlights suspensions and a more inward continuity. The final Un poco Allegro restores lively conversation without seeking haste. Imitations and cadences require horizontal listening; no line should be reduced to mere filling.

Practise the transition from Adagio to Vivace as a single breath. In the Andante, control resolutions and bass-note lengths; in the finale, settle a pulse that lets responses speak. Balance the registrations of the hands before adjusting the presence of the pedals.
