Suite anglaise n°01 - Bourrée n°2 - BWV 806
About this work
After the first Bourrée of English Suite No. 1, Bourrée II changes the texture distinctly. An almost continuously moving bass supports more connected upper lines; the contrast grows from this regular circulation rather than from a mere change of dynamics.
Inner voices appear and disappear through the sequences. Locate their entries, harmonic changes and cadences dividing the two repeated sections. The dance pulse must remain clear beneath the legato without turning the bass into a heavy accompaniment.
First practise the bass alone with fingering that preserves its direction. Add the upper voice, then the inner notes while avoiding vertical accents on every chord. At repeats, vary dynamics or articulation slightly. If Bourrée I returns afterwards, prepare its upbeat within the tempo already established.
