About this work
The Largo places the piano in a more intimate light. Its ornamented melody breathes above a reduced orchestra, and the woodwinds are not merely background: they take up an inflection, extend a cadence or discreetly alter the colour of a phrase.
The challenge is not simply to play slowly but to retain direction. Listen to the bass beneath the ornaments and locate the notes towards which the piano’s runs relax. Silences and the ends of slurs belong to the pulse as well.
Practise each exchange without pedal, then add it according to harmonic changes. The soloist can lighten small notes without rushing them; the orchestra needs to prepare its entries with the same breath so that the movement remains a dialogue rather than a long accompaniment.
