Concerto n°2 en Si b majeur Op. 19 - 1 : Allegro con brio
About this work
Although numbered 2, the B-flat major Concerto is the earlier of Beethoven’s first two piano concertos and was revised several times. Its Allegro con brio retains Classical clarity, yet the piano already unsettles phrases through its entries, ornaments and quick changes of register.
The orchestra presents motifs worth memorising before the soloist arrives. One can then hear how the piano takes them up, lightens them or extends them instead of merely playing over the ensemble. The woodwinds often act as chamber-music partners within the larger forces.
Establish the pulse of the tuttis and their shared articulations first. In the piano runs, think in groups and harmonic directions rather than note by note. Contrasts will gain wit when phrase endings remain clear and each reply begins exactly from the preceding silence.
