About this work
This first-movement cadenza condenses the concerto into the keyboard alone. Recognisable motifs alternate with scales, arpeggios and weightier chords; their order creates a dramatic route rather than merely adding technical difficulty.
Mark the points where the theme returns clearly and those where harmony suspends motion. They provide natural breaths between runs. Contrasts of register will speak more vividly when the bass remains directed and not every high point carries the same weight.
Practise the final trill with the orchestra’s returning bar in mind. Its length and crescendo need to prepare that entrance, not exhaust the sound beforehand. The freedom of a cadenza remains connected to the tempo and character of the Allegro con brio.
