Concerto n°3 en Do mineur Op. 37 - 1 : Allegro con brio

About this work

The Third Concerto’s Allegro con brio establishes a darker tension than Beethoven’s two preceding concertos. The orchestra presents its C-minor motifs at length; when the piano enters, it does not dispel that climate but takes it up with a new attack and mobility.

The movement is held together by one rhythmic kernel returning in different forms. Locate it in tuttis, solo replies and bass lines. More lyrical passages do not erase the conflict: they broaden the phrase before another surge.

In practice, separate the thematic line from the piano runs and establish handovers with the orchestra. Crescendos need to follow the harmony across several bars. Keep the pulse through the silences surrounding the cadenza as well: they are part of its tension.
