About this work
The Largo opens with the piano alone, in a key remote from the first movement’s C minor. Its chords establish a very calm space, soon animated by woodwind replies and more fluid keyboard figures.
Such slowness requires active listening to the harmony. Every change of bass alters the colour of sustained notes; the piano’s ornaments therefore need to lead towards a resolution rather than float outside the tempo. Silences retain the same intensity as played phrases.
Begin with the chords without ornament and judge their resonance. Then add the runs while preserving points of support. The orchestra can lighten its attacks to let the piano’s timbre live, but woodwind entries must remain present enough to renew the dialogue.
