The Fourth Concerto immediately reverses the expected order: the piano begins alone and softly, with a few chords resembling a confidence more than a virtuoso entrance. The orchestra answers in a different harmonic colour, and the whole movement grows from that distance.
Soloist and orchestra no longer merely alternate large blocks. A motif passes between them, a bass changes meaning, an accompaniment becomes a theme. Following these transformations reveals the form beneath the keyboard’s very fluid surface.
At the piano, keep the opening chords simple and directed, without decorative slowing. In rapid passages, bring out the voice that continues the dialogue. The orchestra needs to listen to the soloist’s phrase endings so that every reply seems conceived within the same breath.
