Concerto n°5 en Mi b majeur « Empereur » Op. 73 -1 : Allegro

About this work

At the very opening, the orchestra states broad chords and the piano answers with runs that resemble an improvised cadenza. This gesture announces the movement’s principle: the soloist does not merely enter after an orchestral exposition, but intervenes in the architecture itself. To preserve that breadth, every virtuoso passage must lead towards a precise arrival.

At the piano, separate mechanical preparation from musical direction. Arpeggios and octaves can be practised in groups, but they must later recover a long line. Listen closely to rests and orchestral handovers, which often determine the beginning of the next gesture. In a reduction, suggest changes of timbre without making every chord uniformly hard.

The movement is expansive, with several returns that can sound alike. Give each one a role: statement, development, return, or preparation for the close. Dynamic contrasts remain clear, but the tempo needs enough continuity to prevent the argument from becoming a collection of brilliant episodes. The “Emperor” stands more securely on sound structure than under an oversized crown.
