The Choral Fantasy begins with the piano alone. This three-page Adagio has an improvisatory character: chords, arpeggios, abrupt changes of register and silences gradually search for a direction before the orchestra enters.
Freedom does not mean that every bar has a different tempo. Locate harmonic destinations and motif fragments that give the argument memory. The fastest runs need to lead towards a note or cadence rather than merely fill space.
Practise the bass and structural chords first, then restore ornaments. Adjust pedal to the actual harmony and let silences breathe without breaking tension. The final phrase should prepare the orchestral Allegro rather than conclude like a separate piece.
