After the piano’s improvised introduction, the Allegro brings in the orchestra and gradually builds the theme that will support the entire Choral Fantasy. Cellos, woodwinds, strings and piano pass it among themselves before voices appear in the following section.
This progression works like a series of variations and changes of forces. Identify what remains of the theme when rhythm, register or accompaniment changes. The piano genuinely alternates between soloist and ensemble partner.
In rehearsal, practise every handover with the receiving section. The pulse needs to remain shared despite changes of character. The piano can lighten accompanying runs so instrumental entries remain audible and the choir’s later arrival is truly prepared.
