Les Ruines d'Athènes Op. 113 n°1 - Ouverture

About this work

The Ruins of Athens Overture begins with a restrained Andante con moto in which woodwinds and strings seem to search for direction. The Allegro ma non troppo then turns that hesitation into motion without abandoning a certain theatrical lightness.

Motifs are short and often entrusted successively to several sections. Locate the silences separating them and the cadences that genuinely close a section. This listening prevents the entire fast part from becoming one continuous surge.

In rehearsal, balance woodwind replies against the string bass first. The Allegro needs clear articulation without becoming rushed. Crescendos benefit from following harmonic changes and reserving the broadest attacks for structural returns.
