Les Ruines d'Athènes Op. 113 n°2 - Marche turque

About this work

This Turkish March belongs to Beethoven’s incidental music for The Ruins of Athens, Op. 113. Its theme had already appeared in an earlier work before Beethoven transformed it into an orchestral number. Vienna’s taste for so-called “Turkish” colours can be heard in the march rhythm, firm accents and percussion that gradually brings the procession to life.

The orchestral score reveals a very clear construction. The motif begins with an almost distant lightness, gains instruments and density, then settles into its processional character. To study it, follow the bass and percussion first: they explain the step. Then add the melodic doublings and notice how the same idea changes colour as it moves between winds and strings.

For the conductor, the trap is to confuse vigour with weight. A precise beat, short upbeats and coordinated articulation provide all the accent required. The crescendos should grow through the gradual arrival of instruments as much as through each player’s dynamic. Rehearse the theme without percussion, then the percussion alone: putting them back together immediately exposes Beethoven’s theatrical mechanism.
