Ouverture de Egmont Op. 84

About this work

Egmont opens with a tension-laden Sostenuto: slow chords and silences give weight to each return before the Allegro launches its insistent motif. The overture thereby condenses a passage from oppression towards an energy of resistance.

The rhythmic motif does not remain in one section. It crosses strings, woodwinds and brass while the bass prepares harmonic changes. Listen particularly to moments when motion withdraws: they make the following surge more necessary.

Practise strong attacks without crushing their endings and measure silences within the pulse. The victorious coda must not arrive too early in the dynamics; retain enough reserve for the final expansion to become a transformation of the drama rather than merely more noise.
