The Creatures of Prometheus Overture begins with a brief, theatrical Adagio before turning into Allegro molto e con brio. String runs, sudden accents and woodwind replies immediately create a sense of motion suited to the work’s choreographic origin.
The fast tempo must not erase changes of character. Locate motifs passing from one section to another and cadences that genuinely close a phrase. Short silences often act as springs rather than rests.
In rehearsal, practise string runs with shared articulation and a clearly directed bass. Winds can retain a light attack without losing presence. Reserve the broadest sound for structural returns so that the overture keeps its mobility to the end.
