Ouverture du Roi Stéphane Op. 117

About this work

The King Stephen Overture moves from a measured Andante con moto to a far more mobile Presto. That turn compresses the festive character of the incidental music written for the opening of the Pest theatre into a few moments.

In the fast section, short motifs circulate between strings and winds while accents regularly displace support. The dance pulse remains the safest thread: it distinguishes true returns from merely local repetition.

Practise the transition without rushing the final slow bars. In the Presto, establish articulation and breaths before increasing tempo. Tuttis will remain clear when the bass retains direction and every accent has a precise place within the bar.
