Ouverture : la consécration de la maison Op. 124

About this work

The Consecration of the House begins with a solemn Maestoso, then changes scale when the Allegro con brio sets the orchestral voices in motion. Its ceremonial character therefore rests on more than brass: it is also built through counterpoint and accumulating entries.

To hear this architecture, follow the bass and locate which section launches each motif. An apparently secondary line sometimes drives the next section. Large tuttis gain greater relief when the voices preparing them remain distinct.

Rehearse entries in groups before assembling the orchestra. The pulse must survive both sustained Maestoso chords and Allegro density. In massive passages, rank the attacks so that brilliance masks neither harmony nor phrase direction.
