About this work
Leonore Overture No. 1 was written for a projected performance outside Vienna that never took place. Its Andante con moto establishes the drama without extending it as far as Overtures Nos. 2 and 3, then the Allegro con brio tightens motifs and contrasts.
Listen to how the same cell changes as it passes from strings to winds. Silences and renewed dynamics build a tension that is more compact than narrative. The coda gathers this energy rather than adding another episode.
In rehearsal, give Andante releases a shared duration. In the Allegro, keep the rapid motif light and grouped, especially when it crosses several sections. A steady pulse will keep contrasts lively without suggesting juxtaposed tempos.
