About this work
Leonore Overture No. 2 belongs to the opera’s first version, premiered in 1805. The Adagio draws the listener into a dark space before the Allegro develops motifs connected with Florestan’s drama and the expectation of his release.
The offstage trumpet call interrupts the overture like a real event, not merely a change of colour. Silences surrounding it and the gradual renewal of motion need to preserve their dramatic function.
Practise transitions by connecting tempos through a shared subdivision. Strings will benefit from directing long progressions without forcing every peak. After the trumpet, rebuild the dynamics in stages so that the final release is not announced too early.
