About this work
Leonore No. 3 recasts the opera’s dramatic journey in an even more symphonic form. The slow introduction establishes imprisonment, the Allegro sets motion going, then the offstage trumpet call suddenly opens the prospect of release.
Its difference from Leonore No. 2 can be heard particularly in the proportions and the long rebuilding towards the coda. Locate motif returns after the trumpet: the crescendo grows from their accumulation as much as from increasing volume.
In rehearsal, establish the trumpet’s distance and dynamic before balancing the orchestra around it. Strings need a shared pulse through the coda runs. Preserve dynamic stages so that the final acceleration remains clear.
