Piano Sonata No. 20 in G major, Op. 49 No. 2 — I. Allegro ma non troppo

About this work

The first movement of Beethoven’s Sonata Op. 49 No. 2 achieves a great deal with modest material. Its G-major theme unfolds in clear, conversational phrases, then shifts accents and registers without making the texture heavy. That economy leaves every articulation exposed to the ear.

Keep the pulse flexible in the Allegro ma non troppo. The left-hand quavers should carry the phrase without becoming a row of accents, while the right hand retains a simple singing line. At changes of key, prepare the new colour before the cadence rather than waiting for its first chord.

Treat each repeat as a genuine second reading: preserve the tempo, but listen more closely to answers and phrase endings. In scales and broken chords, aim for the point of arrival. Continuity and clarity serve this movement better than a conspicuous display of speed.
