Quatuor n°14 op. 131 en Do# mineur
About this work
The C-sharp-minor Quartet Op. 131 joins seven movements without interruption. A slow fugue opens the work, followed by a highly mobile Allegro, a brief transition, a broad variation movement, a Presto, a short Adagio and the final Allegro. This continuity turns every ending into a point of departure.
Unity does not depend on one theme but on the memory of intervals, rhythms and colours. In the fugue, every entry needs to remain identifiable without freezing the phrase. The central variations constantly shift the foreground between the two violins, viola and cello.
In rehearsal, work first on passages between movements: inner tempo, breath, opening dynamic and the duration of any silence. Then establish who leads each return and who retains the pulse. Tuning will become steadier when chords are related to their bass and each player hears a harmonic function rather than only an individual shape.
