About this work
The F-major Romance Op. 50 is marked Andante cantabile: the violin must genuinely sing, yet its theme remains connected to the orchestra’s replies. Ornaments extend the melody instead of forming a separate virtuosic layer.
Locate each return of the theme and the new colour given by bass or woodwinds. The form then becomes a succession of transformed returns. High notes gain intensity when prepared through the phrase rather than systematically accented.
Practise the line without ornaments, then restore them within the same bow speed. The orchestra can lighten attacks beneath the soloist’s middle register. Retain a supple pulse and measure silences so that the cantabile does not become static.
