About this work
The G-major Romance Op. 40 opens with a dotted-rhythm violin theme supported by a transparent orchestra. Its initial calm is repeatedly crossed by more tense episodes, particularly when the harmony darkens and articulation becomes more urgent.
Follow the bass and woodwind replies to hear the transition from one climate to another. The theme does not return like an identical photograph: its register, accompaniment and weight change after every detour.
In rehearsal, keep the dotted rhythm precise without hardening it. The soloist can vary bow speed and vibrato according to phrase direction rather than pitch alone. The final return to calm should retain the memory of the darker episodes.
