Beethoven titled Op. 27 No. 2 Sonata quasi una fantasia. The nickname “Moonlight”, which became famous later, is not his. The first movement, Adagio sostenuto, layers a low bass, a continuous stream of triplets and a sparing melody. Its apparent calm rests on a very precise balance between these three planes.

Practise the triplets alone first, very softly, feeling one broad pulse rather than three small attacks. Add the bass without adding weight; it should provide depth, not cover the melody. The upper line then enters as a separate voice. To check the balance, play it an octave higher or sing it while the other two layers remain at the keyboard.

Beethoven’s pedal marking, written for the piano of his time, cannot be transferred mechanically to a modern instrument. Seek dark continuity while renewing the resonance sufficiently at harmonic changes. Tension comes from dissonance and the direction of the bass, not constant rubato. The MIDI can help maintain the flow, but the movement’s quality depends chiefly on listening to the resonance.
