About this work

The true dramatic climax of the sonata known as the “Moonlight” arrives at the end. In this Presto agitato in C-sharp minor, arpeggios rise like waves and break against strongly accented chords. The first movement held its energy back; the third opens the floodgates.

The speed is impressive, but does not explain the music. Beethoven organises the movement around tension, temporary releases and returning motifs. The passagework is therefore not one long scale of difficulties: each figure aims towards an arrival, break or new impulse. When these directions are audible, the form becomes clearer and the pianist can breathe a little more easily — never a bad thing in a Presto.

Practise the arpeggios in groups and locate the chord towards which they lead. Keep the wrist free at the accents: hitting harder cannot repair an unprepared shift. The pedal must support the harmony without mixing changes of bass. Then raise the tempo in stages while preserving the contrasts. A slightly slower but shaped performance reveals Beethoven; a uniform race mostly reveals the stopwatch.
