About this work

The opening gesture of this sonata does not settle in: it springs forward. The right hand climbs the F minor chord, reaches its peak with a small group of notes, then leaves the left hand to answer with clipped chords. Beethoven immediately repeats the impulse one step higher. Within a few bars, the movement has found its engine: a surge, a reply and another surge.

To keep this beginning taut without making it harsh, practise each ascent as one movement of the arm. The short triplet at the top should continue the direction rather than slow down before the left-hand chord. Prepare those chords while the right hand completes its curve; this avoids striking them late or adding weight to conceal an unprepared shift.

The contrast with the more connected phrases is crucial. Keep their accompaniment moving and listen to the upper line instead of automatically slowing down to make it sing. In the repeats and later returns of the opening figure, rebuild the same dynamic stages. The tempo can remain moderate while you work: the Allegro persuades through the precision of its fresh impulses before it persuades through speed.
