Sonate n°01 Op. 2 - 2e mouvement : Adagio

About this work

The Adagio of Sonata Op. 2 No. 1 leaves the first movement’s F minor for a more luminous F major. The right hand presents a richly ornamented song while the left establishes a regular accompaniment whose restraint gives the phrase its freedom.

Ornaments are not additions placed above the melody: they extend its breathing. Locate returns of the theme, changes of register and moments when the harmony briefly darkens the discourse. The three-beat pulse needs to remain perceptible even when the line seems improvised.

Practise the song without ornaments first, then restore each group while preserving its destination. The left hand benefits from separate work, with a directed bass and light chords. Adjust pedal to harmonic changes so that sounds connect without blurring appoggiaturas or silences.
