Sonate n°01 Op. 2 - 3e mouvement : Allegretto

About this work

The third movement of Sonata Op. 2 No. 1 is marked Allegretto, yet its F-minor minuet retains a nervous tension. The phrase moves through small gestures, with accents and silences preventing the three-beat rhythm from becoming a merely elegant dance.

The trio brings a more continuous texture and a different balance between the hands. Follow the bass line beneath the rapid figures: it reveals the harmonic direction and prepares the minuet’s return. That return needs to recover its opening character without becoming heavier.

In slow practice, establish the position of accents before increasing tempo. Lighten phrase endings and keep the left hand supple enough for changes of register to remain clear. In the trio, group notes by musical direction rather than digital habit, then connect the return without an excessive pause.
