Sonate n°08 Op. 13 - Pathétique - 1er mouvement

About this work

The first movement of the “Pathétique” begins by denying the listener a comfortable seat. The dotted chords of the Grave weigh, hesitate and renew the tension; the Allegro di molto e con brio then bursts in with a restless theme in C minor. Beethoven himself gave the sonata its Pathétique title—rare enough to distinguish it from nicknames coined after a work’s composition.

The return of the Grave is not an introduction pasted onto the front of a sonata form: it intervenes in the course of the movement and changes our perception of time. Develop the contrast in character without altering the pulse arbitrarily. In the Allegro, the left-hand tremolos must sustain continuous tension while the right hand retains precise articulation and a genuine sense of phrase.

To avoid stiffness, rehearse the bass shifts alone with a mobile wrist, then add the chords without increasing the volume. Silences and sforzandos are part of the argument; do not turn them all into identical theatrical blows. The movement is expressive enough already. It does not need wind, rain and a smoke machine as well.

What the document containsContents: the first movement on its own, 312 measures of piano music across seven pages, with a MIDI file for listening. The structured engraving comes from ScoreBase and the PDMX corpus under CC0 1.0. LesPartitions.info separated the movement from the complete sonata, matched it to the former catalogue entry, and checked both pagination and musical continuity.
