Sonate n°08 Op. 13 - Pathétique - 2e mouvement
About this work
After the drama of the first movement, Beethoven attempts something more difficult than a grand effect: he makes the piano sing. The Adagio cantabile of the “Pathétique” Sonata places a very simple melody in A-flat major above an accompaniment that moves without respite. Nothing is static, even when time seems suspended.
The theme returns several times, but never as a photocopy. Its register, surroundings and the density of the voices change; we recognise the melody while discovering a new colour. That is where the real work lies: making the return audible without playing exactly the same phrase. A little more direction, a different balance or a better-placed breath is often enough.
At the piano, give priority to the upper line and hear the bass as its support. The middle chords should nourish the sound, not build a small wall beneath every note. Practise without pedal first to check the finger legato, then add it in short touches. If everything becomes comfortable and hazy, the pedal has probably taken over as conductor.
