Symphony No. 1 in C major, Op. 21 — I. Adagio molto, Allegro con brio

About this work

The first movement of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1 starts by frustrating an expectation: the slow introduction initially avoids a firm declaration of C major. The Allegro con brio then establishes more direct energy through chords, scales, accents and exchanges between sections. Beethoven is still writing for a Classical orchestra, but he pushes its contrasts toward a sharper edge.

When reading the score, separate the introduction from the fast main body, then mark the motives that move between strings and winds. Collective rests and sudden restarts are part of the argument. In full orchestral passages, look for the active line instead of assigning equal force to every chord tone.

In rehearsal, check the balance of the opening chords, shared attacks and the direction of rising scales. Wind lines need to speak without being covered by strings. A firm pulse can still leave room for transitions to breathe: con brio asks for spirit and momentum, not permanent hardness.
