Symphony No. 1 in C major, Op. 21 — III. Menuetto, Allegro molto e vivace
About this work
Beethoven labels this movement “Menuetto,” yet the third movement of the First Symphony already has the speed and surprises of a scherzo. Accents shift the point of support, dynamics change abruptly, and scales travel through the orchestra. The trio opens a different space without removing the underlying tension.
To understand the full score, follow upbeats and the transfer of motives between sections. A phrase launched by the strings may find its answer in the winds several bars later. In the trio, notice how sustained notes and more continuous motion alter the listener’s perception of the same broad pulse.
During rehearsal, agree on the weight of accents and the length of short notes. Vivacity depends on a shared beat, not on individual haste. Prepare the return after the trio as carefully as an opening entry: the overall tempo remains consistent, but the original colour must reappear immediately through articulation and dynamics.
