Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 36 — I. Adagio molto, Allegro con brio

About this work

The first movement of Beethoven’s Second Symphony unfolds a slow introduction on a broader scale than its counterpart in the First. Massive chords, descending lines and exchanges between sections prepare an Allegro con brio whose energy comes from syncopation as much as from rapid motives. The orchestra continually changes scale, moving from a short reply to a full tutti.

When reading the full score, map the large areas of the introduction, then identify the rhythm that sets the Allegro in motion. Bass lines often provide the thrust, while winds comment or open a new transition. Off-beat accents must remain visible even when the texture becomes dense.

In rehearsal, pay particular attention to tempo changes and entries after rests. Crescendos need one agreed trajectory. Preserve dynamic room at the start of each build so that later peaks remain distinct and the movement does not settle too early into its maximum volume.
