Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 36 — II. Larghetto

About this work

The Larghetto of Beethoven’s Second Symphony gives its lyrical material to an orchestra in constant motion. Strings establish long phrases, winds take up an inflection or open a reply, and accompaniments maintain a discreet pulse. Gentleness does not exclude accents or changes of perspective; both prevent the movement from losing direction.

In the full score, follow the main melody and the basses that guide the harmony before adding inner voices. Those parts often explain how Beethoven moves from one colour to another. Crescendos and diminuendos make more sense when connected to the complete length of a phrase rather than treated as local effects.

During rehearsal, preserve continuity in repeated notes and in transfers between strings and winds. The tempo must allow the music to sing without immobilising the bar. Establish shared phrase endings, then adjust balances so that countermelodies remain present without competing with the principal line.
