Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 36 — IV. Allegro molto
About this work
The finale of Beethoven’s Second Symphony begins with a short gesture in the winds and strings, then allows the violins to establish continuous motion. These two energies keep returning: a clipped reply, followed by a phrase that sets off again and draws in the rest of the orchestra. The Allegro molto therefore moves through interruptions, restarts and quick changes of orchestral scale.
When reading the full score, mark the entries separated by rests, then follow the string motion as it passes from one section to another. Winds repeat or interrupt the motives; tuttis enlarge them without erasing their articulation. Accents and dynamic contrasts must remain clear even when several lines overlap.
In rehearsal, secure the collective restarts before raising the tempo. A shared attack after each silence creates more momentum than speed alone. Across the movement’s 443 bars, preserve some dynamic room in the early crescendos: the finale needs several peaks rather than one sustained loud level through to the last page.
