Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major, Op. 55 ‘Eroica’ — I. Allegro con brio
About this work
Two E-flat major chords open the first movement of the ‘Eroica’, after which the cellos introduce the theme with almost no transition. That direct entrance sets the movement’s scale: the material travels, changes shape and meets accents that repeatedly disturb any settled sense of balance. The orchestra advances through successive surges rather than self-contained blocks.
In the full score, follow the cello theme and its returns first, then notice what changes around it: an insistent bass, a woodwind counterline, a syncopation or a tutti that shifts the centre of gravity. Three horns broaden the colour, yet tension often comes from rhythm before it comes from volume.
The movement’s 695 bars require careful control of the long span. In rehearsal, settle displaced accents and handovers between sections before shaping the major crescendos. Each peak must lead into what follows; otherwise the orchestra spends its energy too early and the broad course of the Allegro con brio breaks into fragments.
