Symphony No. 7 in A major, Op. 92 — II. Allegretto

About this work

The Allegretto from Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony begins with a persistent rhythm whose weight changes as the orchestra grows. A low line opens the procession, voices are added, and the material later withdraws. The movement draws its strength less from a spectacular theme than from this patient expansion.

When reading the full score, follow the shared rhythm first and mark every sectional entry. Violas, cellos and double basses establish the ground; woodwinds and violins then change the light. As the counterpoint becomes denser, identify instrumental groups instead of trying to absorb every vertical detail at once.

In rehearsal, choose a pulse that lets long phrases breathe without turning the Allegretto into a funeral march. Work on transfers between strings and winds, then on the gradual reductions in dynamics. Silence and the final thinning of the texture belong to the structure.
