Triple concerto pour piano, violon et violoncelle en Ut majeur Op. 56 - 1 : Allegro
About this work
The Triple Concerto’s first movement must animate four partners: cello, violin, piano and orchestra. After the long orchestral exposition, the cello opens the soloists’ dialogue; violin and then piano broaden the phrase rather than merely doubling its theme.
The writing alternates concerto passages with moments close to chamber music. Identify who carries each beginning, who accompanies and how the handover occurs. The three soloists do not need the same weight of sound to remain equal within the form.
In rehearsal, practise the trio without orchestra first, then add the sections that genuinely extend the phrase. The piano can lighten its chords when solo strings sing. Retain a shared pulse beneath runs so that exchanges remain clear.
