About this work
The idée fixe connects the five movements by returning in very different guises. Sometimes sung, sometimes drawn into a dance or distorted into caricature, it lets the listener follow the narrative through a constantly changing orchestra.
In the full score, mark every return of the melodic outline before exploring the details. Compare its register, rhythm and accompaniment: those transformations tell as much as the theme itself.
For rehearsal, build colours by instrumental family and tune exposed intervals at a quiet dynamic. The most striking effects come from prepared contrast; they lose force if the orchestra remains constantly in the foreground.
