The Prelude to Carmen condenses several forces of Bizet’s opera from its opening bars. In this piano reduction the lively bullring motif alternates with massive chords and a darker chromatic idea.

Returns require immediate changes of register, articulation and dynamic. The texture seeks an orchestral effect, yet clarity depends on the hierarchy between bass, chords and rapid lines.

Practise runs with economical movement and chords without hardness. Prepare each contrast before it arrives, maintain the pulse through crescendos and reserve full sonority for genuine peaks.
