About this work
The Polovtsian Dances belong to the opera Prince Igor. In their staged form, they unite chorus and orchestra in a sequence of contrasting characters: broad melody, gliding dance, livelier episodes for male voices and sweeping collective returns. Borodin died before completing the opera; the version commonly performed was completed and extensively orchestrated by Rimsky-Korsakov and Glazunov.
The document offered here is not the full score of that scene. It is Felix Blumenfeld’s edition for piano. The pianist must therefore suggest changes of ensemble through touch, register and pedal. Begin by identifying the themes and transitions; attempting to reproduce the full orchestral volume at sight only thickens the chords and erases the dance.
In fast passages, choose the essential voices and keep the rhythmic bass clear. The broad melodies, by contrast, require breath and frequently renewed pedal. The most reliable guide is the contrast between sections: every return should be recognisable even without chorus, tambourine or a large orchestra surrounding the piano.
