About this work
The sixteen Waltzes Op. 39 were first written for piano four hands, after which Brahms made two solo versions. This PDF gives the fuller concert version. The miniatures move between keys and characters in only a few lines. Triple metre unifies the set, but no two waltzes require exactly the same sway.
Tempo giusto, Poco sostenuto, Vivace and Poco più Andante define markedly different gestures. Some pages place the melody on top of close chords; others pass a line between the hands or use off-beat accents. In the concert version, extra voices and wider spans provide much of the difficulty. They should enrich the colour without making the dance heavy.
Practise each waltz with bass and melody first. Add inner parts only when the second and third beats remain light. Choose a specific tempo for every number, then rehearse the moves between them so that contrast arrives without a long reset.
