About this work
The simplified Waltzes Op. 39 are not a later anonymous arrangement. Brahms himself prepared two solo versions from the four-hand collection. This edition keeps the keys, phrases and contrasts of all sixteen numbers while thinning several chords, reducing spans and redistributing inner parts to make the keyboard writing more approachable.
Simplification does not remove the musical work. The first-beat bass, lighter second and third beats, and a melody that sometimes lies within the texture still need separate treatment. Tempo giusto, Poco sostenuto, Vivace and Poco più Andante demand their own pulses. Giving the entire collection one comfortable tempo would erase its strongest contrasts.
Compare a page with the concert version on record 498. Identify what has been removed, then check that the principal line remains equally expressive. Work without pedal to stabilise basses and upbeats before adding short resonance. This version is friendlier for a first reading of the cycle, but still needs precise articulation and prepared transitions.
