About this work
The fourth Ballade of Op. 10 opens in B major with an Andante con moto whose rocking motion sounds almost familiar. A gentle line rests on regular accompaniment, while inner parts gradually alter the colour. Brahms supplies no specific programme here. The narrative force lies in the way the same material moves away from its starting point.
After the restrained opening pages, rhythm grows more active and the texture fills with pressing figures. A central episode widens the register before the opening material returns with new gravity. The seven pages are therefore more than a quiet-fast-quiet pattern. The reprise remembers the agitation and reshapes the breathing of otherwise recognisable phrases.
Play the melody alone and mark where it enters the middle register. Add the bass, keeping the remaining accompaniment quiet. In the central section, direct quick figures towards their peaks instead of driving every note. At the return, recover the first tempo without erasing accumulated tension; shorter pedal and more present basses are enough to darken the colour.
