About this work
The fifth Capriccio places its agitation inside off-beat accents. In C-sharp minor, Agitato, ma non troppo presto layers a pressing line, mobile basses and chords that shift the main supports. Urgency comes from this rhythmic friction. Moving faster than the marking allows would hide inner voices and make the broad chords inaccurate.
The central texture changes direction: heavier chords and broader phrases interrupt the opening circulation. Brahms then prepares the return in stages until the first figures regain their place. The form becomes clear when the player separates the motor rhythm, top notes and bass changes. Without that hierarchy, the five pages seem much denser than they are.
Practise the off-beats while tapping the pulse lightly, then play each hand without rubato. Combine them at a speed that allows dissonances to resolve audibly. In the chordal episode, prepare positions before each attack and release weight at once. Keep the subdivision through the slowing so that Tempo primo recovers its energy without a violent restart.
