About this work
The first Capriccio of Op. 76 begins without preamble: semiquavers rise and fall inside an unsettled 6/8 while a longer line searches for space within the motion. Un poco agitato does not ask for a race. It describes sustained tension, fed by displaced accents and shifts of register between the hands.
Brahms gradually thickens the texture. Motifs circulate, octaves reinforce selected peaks and chords briefly interrupt the flow before it resumes. The main difficulty is to project several layers in writing that is almost constantly active. If every fast note receives equal weight, the piece becomes an exercise; bass notes, sustained tones and harmonic arrivals must reveal the route.
Practise both hands slowly while marking only the notes that carry the line. Then gather semiquaver groups into broad beats without an automatic accent at the start of each one. Build crescendos by enlarging the gesture rather than increasing speed. Keep the pedal mobile: it may connect the harmony, but it must not blur basses or obscure changes of direction.
