About this work
The first Capriccio of Op. 116 strikes immediately through repeated chords and a Presto energico in D minor. The rhythm seems frontal, yet replies move quickly between registers and several lines cross beneath the chords. A firm pulse is essential; hardness is not. The sound must remain able to relax whenever Brahms lowers the dynamic.
The central section broadens note values and transfers tension to more connected voices. This retreat does not break the piece: it reveals intervals and bass motions already present in the opening.
