Capriccio en Ré mineur Op. 116-7

About this work

The final Capriccio of Op. 116 returns to D minor and to the first piece’s agitation, now with a more circling gesture. Allegro agitato multiplies broken figures, accents and register crossings. The hands frequently share a single line; clean handovers matter more than spectacular speed.

A central episode broadens note values and makes the voices more connected before the opening material returns. Dynamic contrasts occur rapidly, sometimes inside one phrase. Brahms closes the set by recalling its starting point without repeating it literally. The coda concentrates earlier gestures and still requires an available pulse.

Mark every transfer of motif between the hands and first play each group with one finger. Restore full fingering without accenting the joins. Prepare chord positions above the keyboard and release immediately after attack. Keep a reserve of tempo and dynamics for the final pages; the outcome will be more powerful if agitation stays organised through the last chord.
