After the violence of the Maestoso, the D-major Adagio changes the scale of the concerto. Strings and bassoons establish a restrained texture before the piano enters with widely spaced chords and an almost murmured line. This is more than a decorative contrast: the movement suspends the earlier conflict and turns the exchange inward.

Long note values expose every attack. A piano chord played too vertically can sever the phrase, while an unsupported orchestral note weakens the harmony beneath it. Players must share a pulse despite the slow tempo, follow bass resolutions and allow each woodwind timbre to remain distinct. The solo ornaments extend the melody rather than disturbing its calm.
